Safety First

Americans are busier than ever it seems. With schedules packed full to almost bursting at the seams and commutes taking us from place to place with little time to spare it is no wonder that so many mistakes are made along the way. Fender benders due to distracted driving are only the tip of the iceberg when considering the repercussions of not paying enough attention behind the wheel. Distracted drivers cause delays, injuries and discomfort to many, not just those involved in the individual accident. Talking on the phone, searching for items on the floor or in the glove compartment, or simply driving while exhausted cause a great deal of accidents due to simple inattention.

A survey of dangerous driver behavior was released by Nationwide Insurance in 2007, reporting that 98% of the drivers polled consider themselves to be safe drivers. Conversely the majority, admitted to driving while distracted, in addition to admitting to being passengers in vehicles driven by other distracted drivers. Distracted drivers are more likely to have to throw on their breaks for an unexpected red light or pedestrian in the road which is dangerous for everyone present. It is time that we all made more of an effort to make safety a priority in our own lives and in the lives of others.

The month of June recognizes National Safety Month as sponsored by the National Safety Council. National Safety Month activities address the most noteworthy reasons unintentional injuries and fatalities occur on the road, in the workplace, at home and in our communities in an effort to make the United States a safer place for everyone to live and thrive. From preventing distracted driving to preparing families and individuals for possible emergency situations, a focus on safety helps build awareness and reminds people of their responsibilities to each other as responsible citizens. Everyone can begin by making better decisions in their own lives, especially when behind the wheel.
