Families Take Manhattan

For those who live outside New York, the city of Manhattan conjures up all sorts of images. African Americans in particular associate it with Harlem and its legendary Apollo Theater. It is the home of Times Square’s giant media displays and the birthplace of the Broadway musical. Manhattan has also been the setting of countless movies and television shows as a city of adult sophistication and world-class shopping. But what you may not know is that Manhattan offers some of the most unique family attractions outside of a theme park, and without those costly admission prices.

Is it true that M&M’s melt in your mouth, not in your hand? Get that and all your other M&M questions answered at M&M’s World, located in Times Square. This three-story store and entertainment center is devoted to this famous candy. You can purchase clothes, accessories, memorabilia, and of course, M&M’s of several varieties and flavors. For an additional chocolate fix, go across the street to Hershey’s Times Square. This is the place to get Hershey’s, Reese’s Pieces, and anything else needed to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Manhattan has plenty to satisfy your children and your inner child. Visiting FAO Schwartz is an adventure for all ages. Three floors of toys, books, games and activities of all varieties, spanning different cultures and eras, come together in one spot. Afterwards, visit Toys “R” Us Times Square. Far beyond the typical toy store, this Toys “R” Us boasts an indoor Ferris wheel and a massive collection of toys and children’s items.

Older children and adults may be interested in Madame Tussauds New York, a celebrity wax museum. Get your picture taken with uncannily realistic wax images of Hollywood’s A-list actors, platinum-selling musicians, major league athletes, renowned political leaders and legends of long ago. Then visit Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, a museum of strange facts, artifacts, creatures and people.

For dining, your options are endless. Manhattan offers nearly every type of cuisine possible, including Caribbean, African, Mediterranean, Asian, and traditional American food. If you prefer something more familiar, national chains such as Pizza Hut and TGI Friday’s are available. Whatever’s on the menu, you’ll have ample time to burn off calories. Being an older city, Manhattan is designed more for pedestrians than for automobiles. You will find walking far more convenient than driving or taking a taxicab. These are just some of the reasons your family should take Manhattan when making summer vacation plans.
