May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Enjoy the Ride – Safely!
by Tanisha Coleman (BPRW)
This month is recognized as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Each year, states and motorcycle organizations across the country conduct a variety of activities to promote the importance of motorist awareness.
Did you know that there is a National Association of Black Bikers, a non-profit organization created for the Black motorcycle rider? The organization is focused on the pursuit of protecting and promoting the interests of Black motorcyclists nationwide and aspires to be the largest group of motorcycle enthusiasts (www.nabbweb.org).
Although riding motorcycles can be fun, it can be dangerous as well. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle fatalities account for 11 percent of total road fatalities and have increased each year from a low of 2,116 in 1997 to an all-time high of 4,810 in 2006.
Listed below are some friendly safety reminders to help you enjoy your motorcycle ride safely (NHTSA):
• Make sure you are properly licensed to operate a motorcycle.
• Know and obey all traffic laws.
• Avoid tailgating other vehicles.
• Use signals when appropriate.
• Be extremely careful and aware at intersections, where most motorcycle – vehicle collisions occur.
• Remain visible to other motorists at all times.
• Refrain from riding in a car’s blind spot.
• Try to anticipate what may happen more than other vehicle drivers (i.e., drivers backing their cars out of driveways may not see a motorcyclist).
• Place a greater emphasis on defensive driving.
• Be more cautious when riding in inclement weather, on slippery surfaces, or when encountering obstacles on the roadway.
• Wear a helmet at all times, preferably one that has a U.S. Department of Transportation label.
• Wear eye protection, as well as the right shoes, gloves and clothing.
• Refrain from riding a motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol – it can decease an operator’s ability to maneuver the motorcycle safely.
• Make sure you’re buckled in for safety everyday.
